Rob Tod, Founder of Allagash Brewing Co., Wins James Beard Award

On Monday May 6th, Rob Tod, founder of Allagash Brewing Company was crowned a James Beard Award winner.  Tod was named the 2019 Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer at the James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago.

The James Beard Foundation has embraced small, independent craft brewers as part of the culinary culture for the past 15 years.  And in the past 25 years, Tod has had quite an impact on the craft beer industry.

In 1995, Tod opened the Allagash Brewing Company in a corner of a warehouse in Portland, Maine.  He welded together a 15-barrel brewing system, installed some drains, and the journey to greatness began.  Tod’s first beer produced was a Belgian-style wheat beer called Allagash White.  I’m sure all of you have heard of it!

Three years later, Allagash White wins the Gold medal at the World Beer Cup.  Soon after, Tod hired Jason Perkins.  A phenomenal brewer that was hired to expand the brewing operation beyond Tod’s one style Belgian beer.  And by 2004 that goal of expansion was reached with Allagash offering several varieties of beer.

Allagash outgrew their space and by 2010 they officially moved into a building next door that they built.  More brewery space, a large tasting room, keg line, and a canning system was added as well.  Business was booming and continues to thrive to this day.

Allagash believes in giving back to their community and pushing the boundaries of sustainability.  They purchase local ingredients, support local groups, and volunteer in community events.  They are all about making sure their community flourishes as well as their brewery.

Congratulations Allagash!

And here’s a little photo of me and an Allagash fellow from the recent Jersey City Craft Brewery Festival:

Cheers to the best beer,

Danyelle

Meet me at the bar. Whether it’s barbells, whiskey libraries, rum sanctuaries, or craft breweries…I’ll see you there. I travel far and wide for a good IPA, I can get down with a good Manhattan, and home is where the wine is. If my taste buds are pleased, you’ll know about it. Oh, and I like to lift. So, enjoy my fitness journey with a glass of wine.
