On Super Bowl Sunday, Bud Light aired a commercial that sparked a lot of controversy between Miller Lite, Coors Light, and the National Corn Growers Association.
Bud Light not only touted that corn syrup is not one of the ingredients used in their beer, but also targeted Miller Lite and Coors Light in the process saying that they do include corn syrup as one of their main ingredients.
Kevin Ross, VP of the National Corn Growers Association is very upset saying that Bud Light is attacking corn farmers during tough times and that they’re making corn syrup out to be an inferior ingredient. There are now hashtags of #dumpdillydilly and #yourecutoff all over Twitter. The National Corn Growers Association even tweeted about their disappointment with @BudLight.
The interesting fact is that corn syrup is an ingredient in a lot of Anheuser-Busch’s beers. Bud Ice, Busch, Busch Ice, Busch Light, King Cobra, Natural Ice, Natural Light, and all of the beer “ritas” have corn syrup in them. Yikes!
In response to the uproar sparked by this controversial commercial, Anheuser-Busch answered with this, “Bud Light’s Super Bowl commercials are only meant to point out a key difference in Bud Light from some other light beers,” and they “fully support” corn growers and will continue to invest in the industry.
We’ll see if the corn industry welcomes them back with open arms. Doubtful, considering they have just been thrown under the bus.
